Hands on with the Nokia E75 QWERTY Slider
Today I took delivery of a demo Nokia E75 handset provided by 3mobile Australia. The Nokia E75 the latest qwerty keyboard handset however this one features a bit of a twist.
Hidden behind the body of the handset is a full length qwerty keypad.
This slide out keyboard gives the user two methods of text input, the slideout qwerty or standard T9 keypad entry.

My first impression of the handset was “Bloody Hell it’s HEAVY!”, and trust me, it is! 137 grams in weight compared with my Nokia 5800 at 109 grams. But you can feel why the weight is there, it feels sturdy. Really sturdy, with a solid slide action on the keypad and metal casing. It’s feels like a weapon that any boardroom dweller would feel confident walking down a dark ally with.
Given that the handset is powered by the Symbian S60v3 OS I wont go into too great a detail as you can find alot of previous articles relating to S60v3 in this very blog, I will however point out a few new additions such as “destinations” which allow you to control the prioritisation of your access points, i.e WiFi before 3G.
This feature however, as with the Nokia 5800 is yet to be fully integrated into all of the functions within the handset that require access point connections.
The E75 also comes pre installed with both Nokia Email & Email on 3 push email clients.
My personal preference is Email on 3 as a. all usage is free when you are also on an X-Series 8 or higher Mobile Broadband pack and b. it is powered by System SEVEN, more info on which can be found by a quick search above.
I did however encounter a problem with Email on 3 on this demo handset. Firstly I had to upgrade the software as it was out of date, not a problem, I prefer to be up to date, but out of habit I attempted to setup my gmail accounts using the Email on 3 client using my home WiFi connection and it kept throwing up a connection error. Really annoying, until I realised that Email on 3 will ONLY let you connect via the Planet 3 APN! Lucky it’s free otherwise I would consider this VERY rude.
As the handset is essentially a variation of the very popular E71 of which my wife is a user of and wouldn’t live without I have handed the handset over to her to trial for a few days in order to give a true user comparison between the two.
Stay tuned for more updates over the next few days.
