Rant – Nokia’s Ovi Store vs Android Market vs Itunes App Store

Itunes App Store vs Android Market vs OVI Store

Having recently played with a HTC Magic running Android and getting stuck into the Android Market as well as playing with friends iPhones and the Apple iTunes App Store, I can see a major issue that will prevent Nokias recently released OVI Store from making a killing.

What is this critical flaw you ask?

Symbian apps are all too expensive!

When looking at the Apple App Store and Android Market top apps, you can see a clear trend… The most successful apps are inexpensive and work on the principle of “sell cheap and as often as possible”.

Many of the Apps found in the OVI Store are in excess of $10USD and go as high as $25USD which will seriously affect the volume of units sold.

Now I know that OVI Store themselves cannot be blamed for the high costs of the apps available. This problem has to fall squarely in the lap of the Symbian Developers who are publishing their apps via the OVI Store and expecting users to be happy paying a high price.

Symbian developers, I implore you, take a leaf out of Iphone and Android developers books, lower your app prices and reap the rewards of high unit turnover.

//end rant.

  1. It would appear that the OVI store themselves CAN be blamed – apparently the fees to register as a developer and sell your Apps on OVI are more than the iPhone and Android stores.

    The OVI store has had a pretty disastrous start, and right now it doesn’t really offer anything to entice those who normally visit the numerous blogs and dev sites away from such places and to the OVI store as their choice of sites for apps.
