How to: Remove Installed applications from Nokia 5800 when Uninstall fails

I recently purchased a Nokia 5800 on the Three Mobile network here in Australia.

The Nokia 5800 does run the S60 operating system similar to the Nokia N95 & Nokia E71 however due to the touch screen the 5800 uses S60v5. This is an upgraded version of S60v3 when enables touch support.

Due to this operating system difference, some S60v3 applications won’t work properly if at all on the Nokia 5800 running S60v5.

A good example of this is Psiloc Connect, one of my favourite S60v3 apps.

One of the first apps I installed on my new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was Psiloc Connect in the hope that it would work.

It didnt. Sure it installed fine and I was able to register the app and configure it’s settings, however, one critical part of the app didnt work. It failed to create an Access Point through which to route all application connectivity through.

Unfortunatly Psiloc have not yet released an updated version with S60v5 support.

On restarting the handset I was also continually presented with an error telling me to “re-install the application” which application I don’t know but I am sure it means Psiloc Connect seeing as it is the only one not working.

So the only thing left to do is uninstall the app the free up it’s memory allocation and get rid of that annoying startup error.

To remove installed applications on S60V5 you need to do the following:

Press the white menu key,
Select Settings,
Select Application mgr,
Select Installed Apps,
Highlight the application to be uninstalled and hit Options,
Select Uninstall from the menu.

This should have worked. Should being the operative word. Instead, it said that it worked but the icon still remained and I was still able to access the app.

Luckilly there is another way to remove applications from an S60 based handset, via PC Suite or Ovi Suite.

Simply connect your handset to your computer and open either PC or Ovi Suite,
Open the Nokia Application Installer,
Select the app you wish to uninstall and hit the Rubbish Bin icon.

The app will then be removed without any issues whatsoever.

  3. Just wanted you all to know you don’t need psiloc connect on the 5800, due to it’s new functionality.

Set the “internet” group as standard-connection, and use “standardconnection” in the different apps, and it will use the available wifi.

See this post for details: http://www.nampblog.com/2009/01/short-user-review-of-nokia-5800.html

Yes the 5800 does have its new “Destinations” function which does the job of Psiloc Connect. The problem is that it has not been integrated properly for use by legacy applications such as Opera, nor does it even work within the majority of native nokia apps or functions such as the feed reader!

  6. Hello: my problem is a little different. I can’t delete some applications by pcsuite Nokia Application Installer. It says that I have 6 app instaled with 0kb size. I can’t install them either because I recieve a message saing that the application is already installed so, my problem is, I can’t re install the applications or delete them. Have anyone else had the same problem? Do you know a possible solution? I don’t want to format the 8gb memory and do a hard reset… :(
    Any help will be apreciated.
