Telstra NextG Roaming 850mhz compatible handsets currently available on Three
With the Telstra NextG 3G roaming becoming available to Three Mobile customers soon after April this year questions have been raised as to which handsets are compatible with the NextG 850mhz network.
Unfortunately not every handset is able to access the 850mhz spectrum so if you are wanting or needing the expanded 3G coverage made available by this agreement the you may want to check your handset.
Currently there are already a number of devices in the Three range that are capable of accessing Telstra NextG 3G roaming.
They are:
• Nokia 6120
• Nokia 6500
• Nokia 6600
• Nokia E63
• BlackBerry Bold
Handsets which were previously ranged that are 3G roaming capable:
• HTC Tytn 2
• HTC 838 Pro
• HTC P3600
• Palm Treo 750
• Nokia 5610
At launch, customers with an 850MHz capable handset will be able to use 3G roaming when outside of 3’s Broadband Zones. If customers do not have an 850 capable handset, it is not possible to get 3G roaming via that handset, as it is not simply a software upgrade.
USIM settings for all customers will be configured via an “Over the Air” process prior to the launch of 3G roaming and there is no action required by the customer.
Current modems are not able to access 3G roaming. New mobile broadband modems will be ranged at the launch of 3G roaming and customers will need to enable 3G roaming via the Connection Manager.
There is currently no standard mark on the handset or modem itself to know if it 850 capable. Nearer launch a list of 3G roaming capable handsets and modems ranged by 3 will be published on the website.
Future launch packs will indicate if the handset is 3G roaming capable.
More info will be provided as it comes to hand.

3mobile have been releasing the “Black” Nokia E71-3 phones as well which are 850/NextG compatible. The older white E71-1 (or E71-2 for that matter, which is not available anyway from 3) is not 850/NextG compatible.
Note that 3’s website still has the old E71-1 specs listed for the E71-3 variant. Nokia’s website has the correct specifications for the E71-3 which includes UMTS 850/2100.
