Reader Question – How to backup Nokia Maps License before a firmware re-flash

Reader hOSs has posed an interesting question. How can you back up your Nokia Maps License before a handset re-flash.

In short you can’t.

Good news however, is that you don’t need too.

The Nokia Support centre does have information relating to this very issue, however it is a little buried.

Here are the relevant extracts from Nokia Support (http://www.nokia.com.au/explore-services/nokia-maps/support/nokia-maps-2-0/faq#What happens to my navigation license in Maps 2.0 if I have made a firmware software update (‘firmware reflash’) of my mobile device?).

What happens to my navigation license in Maps 2.0 if I change my SIM card?
If you change your SIM card, you can regain your navigation license in Maps 2.0 for the remaining time period. Go to Options > Extras > Drive & Walk > My licenses > Update.

Please allow the connection to the license server to check for your licenses by selecting Yes and by then selecting the correct internet access point (if asked). A note, xx-day license activated is displayed where xx is the amount of days left on your license, or alternatively the mobile device informs you that the license has been updated.

In some cases the application automatically detects the SIM card change and asks you whether you want to update. Please note that after you have changed your SIM card for the first time, your license is bound to your current mobile device.

What happens if I change my mobile device with Maps 2.0?
If you have purchased a license (for example, for navigation) in Maps 2.0, you can transfer your license freely from one mobile device to another as long as you keep using the same SIM card. You can transfer your license by connecting to the license server. Go to Options > Extras > My licenses > Update.

Please allow the connection to the license server to check for your licenses by selecting Yes and by then selecting the correct internet access point (if asked). A note, xx-day license activated is displayed where xx is the amount of days left on your license, or alternatively the mobile device informs you that the license has been updated.

Please note that after you have changed your mobile device for the first time, your license is tied to your current SIM card. Please also note that you cannot use one license for two mobile devices simultaneously.

What happens if I change both the SIM card and the mobile device with Maps 2.0?
If you have purchased a license (for example, for navigation) in Maps 2.0, and you change your mobile device and your SIM card, please contact Nokia Care services via http://www.nokia.com/support

Before calling Nokia Customer Care, please make sure that you have the following information at hand:

Date of license purchase
License type you wish to transfer (for example, navigation and length of license)
The customer contact information in case of further questions (telephone number and/or email address)
Order code and license code (if available – see the purchase email if you entered your email address during the purchase)
Current IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) code (to see your IMEI, enter *#06# on your mobile device)
Previous IMEI code if your mobile device was exchanged
Payment method (without your credit card number!)
Phone number (including country and network provider code)

Can I update the license in Maps 2.0 as often as I like?
All purchases can be tied either to your SIM card or the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) code of your mobile device.

The license can be transferred when the SIM card or mobile device is changed. If you change your mobile device and transfer your license to the new mobile device, the license is tied to your SIM card. If you change your SIM card and transfer your license to the new SIM card, it is tied to the IMEI of your mobile device. If you want to change your SIM card or mobile device again, contact Nokia Care services at http://www.nokia.com/support

Before calling Nokia Customer Care, please make sure that the following information is at hand:

Date of license purchase
License type you wish to transfer (for example, navigation and length of license)
The customer contact information in case of further questions (telephone number and/or email address)
Order code and license code (if available – comes from the purchase email if you entered your email address during the purchase)
Current IMEI code (to see your IMEI, enter *#06# on your mobile device)
Previous IMEI code if your mobile device was exchanged
Payment method (without your credit card number!)
Phone number (including country and network provider code)
Why can I not transfer my license from one mobile device to another mobile device in Maps 2.0?
If you are not able to transfer your license from one mobile device to another, it is likely that you are using a license purchased not with Maps 2.0, but with an earlier version of Maps.

In that event, please contact Nokia Care services via http://www.nokia.com/support

Before calling Nokia Customer Care, please make sure that the following information is at hand:

Date of license purchase
License type you wish to transfer (for example, navigation and length of license)
The customer contact information in case of further questions (telephone number and/or email address)
What happens to my navigation license in Maps 2.0 if I have made a firmware software update (‘firmware reflash’) of my mobile device?
If you update the firmware software (or perform a hard reboot) of your mobile device during the validity of your navigation license, you can manually update the license via Options > Extras > My licenses > Update.

Please allow the connection to the license server to check for your licenses by selecting Yes and by then selecting the correct internet access point (if asked). A note xx-day license activated is shown where xx is the amount of days left of your license, or alternatively the mobile device informs you that the license is updated.

What happens if I lose the contents of my memory card or hard disk because, for example, reformatting makes it necessary to restore purchased features in Maps 2.0 to the mobile device?
Because the map data is free and can be downloaded directly from our server or via Nokia Map Loader to your mobile device, the map data can be replaced any time for free. However please consider that when Maps uses a mobile internet connection, large amounts of data may be downloaded to your mobile device, resulting in costs arising from the download. See our FAQ on how to keep such costs down and contact your network provider for more information about your data plan.

The purchased features (Drive & Walk navigation, Traffic info, and Guides) can be recovered via the update function. You’ll find the update function when you move into Options > Extras > My licenses > Update.

Please allow the connection to the license server to check for your licenses by selecting Yes and by then selecting the correct internet access point (if asked). A note xx-day license activated is shown where xx is the amount of days left of your license, or alternatively the mobile device informs you that the license is updated.

How can I transfer a Guide license in Maps 2.0 after a firmware software update (‘firmware reflash’)?
If the entire mobile device is formatted, for example due to a firmware software update (“firmware reflash”), you can retrieve the purchased license for your city guide via the update function. For instance, if you press the update button after the mobile device was formatted, your license for, say, a city guide to Berlin is transferred. The city guide license is updated via Options > Extras > My licenses > Update.

Note that you may still need to update the contents of the city guide itself. The guide file itself has to be downloaded again using the city guide menu. It is then unlocked automatically because the license is already on your mobile device.

When I try to enter my licence code, Maps 2.0 tells me that it is an invalid code. What can I do to activate the license?
You may be entering the license code for an older version of Maps, and you need to update your license. Select Options > Extras > My licenses > Update.

Please allow the connection to the license server to check for your licenses by selecting Yes and by then selecting the correct internet access point (if asked). A note xx-day license activated is shown where xx is the amount of days left of your license, or alternatively the mobile device informs you that the license is updated.

I hope this answers your question hOSs. Please do let me know how you go.

  1. Once again Decoder you have done it again! Spot on with your advice. I felt embarrassed having read your link… but i just couldn’t find such answers at nokia. its such a big site in the help department, my searches were bringing up generic help links.(alot like microsoft.com help links) anyways the info you so kindly provided alleviated all my fears of the hard reset. Everything that requires a license can be easily regained. And it was! All my early learning installation problems to c drive on my first smartphone were fixed by your advice.( msn messenger for s60 caused them) My c drive is back to 58mb memory and is quick and snappy to operate. Decoder is definitely my mobile phone mechanic now! do you do cars aswell?!
