How to fix Nokia “Phone start-up Failed. Contact Supplier” error
Finally, after months of saying “Yes dear I will upgrade your Nokia E71’s firmware this weekend”, I actually did.
Being a Hutchison Three mobile customer here in Australia we are a little behind in the upgraded firmware stakes so I firstly had to change the handset’s product code to a EURO one.
Once this was done, and a couple of lessons were learnt, such as, ensure that no other software is connected to the handset before trying to find it in NSS, I was able to successfully upgrade the handset to the latest Nokia E71 firmware.
The phone rebooted fine and all appeared well.
I then proceeded to restore a backup of the handset data. This is when the fun began. The restore appeared to go smoothly and the handset restarted.
I was then presented with a sickening error.
“Phone start-up failed. Contact Supplier”
Eek!
2 hours later I had the solution. A hard reset.
To do this on the Nokia E71 you need to be a a little dexterous.
Ensure the handset is turned off.
now press and hold the following keys and turn the handset on.
* + 3 + Green button
Normally on an E71 you need to press the “Shift” button in the bottom left corner in order to access the number pad however not in this instance.
This handset will now reset to the default firmware configuration (still in the new firmware mind you) and all data will be deleted.
from what I can tell so far the issue arose from trying to restore a backup of the previous handsets settings.
Contacts, Messages and Calendar all restored with no issues at all.
What this now means is that I have to go back through and re-install all of the software that had been installed and reconfigure all user preference settings.
This is a bit of a pain but hopefully the new firmware will be worth it.

Phew, thought I had bricked my phone. After updating the firmware to v300 then attempting a backup I got the “phone startup failed. Contact retailer” message.
This hard reset tip worked spot on. Still have to reinstall all my apps which is a pain but it’s miles better than flushing my phone down the toilet.
Cheers mate

I gladly join the bunch of people praising you!
Hard reset worked and the phone is now being restored with only the contacts and messages not the settings. I can happily put those back on myself!
Cheers!
