Psiloc Connect - Holy Grail of S60 Access Point management? I am not convinced.

Posted on May 6th, 2008 | by decoder |

wifi, apn, access point, 3G, automationWell I have probably just destroyed my chance of ever receiving freebies from but unfortunatly I am simply not convinced that this new release application is worth the money and nor the hype.

The idea of Psiloc Connect is that it will automaticlly prioritise which Access Point your handset connects to, therefore if you are at home then it will automaticlly utilise your home , or your neighbours if yours isnt working, or if not at home it will fall back to or GPRS where available. This is supposed to help save you money by choosing the best (cheapest) connection available to you at any given time.

Nice in theory, however, my brain does this for free.

Every time I open an application on my , which wants to connect to the internet, I am prompted with a selection of available Access Points that I have previously used. If I am at home then my home connection is available, if I am at work then my work is available, and if I am in between with no is available then I am connected to within two button press’.

Am I missing something?

Please don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of , and in particular their absolutly brilliant S60 app Gsync, but unfortunatly I don’t quite see the point in paying $15USD for Psiloc Connect to save two button press’.

Sorry .

yes you are missing something… Mail For Exchange for example is not enable to use any random wifi hotspot but only a predefined one…

Ah yes ok I’ll pay that.

I guess it would also be good for those who constantly use VOIP on their handsets. The auto switching between access points could prove handy.

About Psiloc, have you had any chance to be part of their Locatik beta ? I’d be curious to hear your feedback about this. I’m beta-testing it myself and up to now I still don’t see the advantage of it. Alhtough I’m also a big fan of Psiloc

Hi Moom, Your message is actually the first that I have heard of Psiloc’s Locatik thus no I have unfortunatly not had a chance to beta test it.

From what I could see from the website it looks like a location publishing service?

For some reason the site didnt like firefox and I was too snobby to try it in IE so I couldnt see much.

If it is a location publishing service then I would probably be of the same opinion as you.

Yes there are useful applications for such a service but for my money it will chew up way to much battery and to be honest I don’t want everyone knowing exactly where i am.

I would however still be interested in checking it out. Is it open via invite??

Its also handy for automatic retrieval of email which will not work unless you specify the actual connection you want to use.

Having problems with VOIP though which bypasses it and uses the WLAN connection direct.
