My optimal Nokia N95 configuration - Part 1 - Applications
Posted on March 2nd, 2008 | by decoder |As previously reported I recently encountered an, I guess you could say “fatal error” with my Nokia N95 which prevented me from installing new applications by way of a ‘File Corrupted” error. There was no rhyme or reason to this error and the only way I found to rectify the issue was to perform a hard reset which completely reset my handset back to its factory settings.
This process completely deleted all contacts, messages, applications, bookmarks and personalisation settings.
So with a “blank canvas” I must now re-install and configure my Nokia N95 handset back to my optimal configuration.
So lets get this thing configured.
Firstly to make things quick and easy we should, and if you have it available, configure your wifi handset to connect to your wifi router.
Press Menu
Then press Tools
Then select the WLAN Wiz icon.
Your handset will then search for available wireless networks.
Once the scan has been completed select the appropriate access point and when prompted enter your wireless networks WEP or WPA security Key.
There, we are now online with your wireless network which would generally be faster and cheaper than your mobile broadband internet connection.
Now, onto Google. The great thing about Google is that everything is close together.
So in a very short time you can Google-ify your S60 handset. Here’s How.
The new S60 Google Search application, and Google Maps for Mobile can be found at the Mobile Google portal http://mobile.google.com. Bookmark this address as it provides you with direct access to all Google Mobile services such as Picasa, Blogger, Calendar, YouTube, Docs, Notepad and Reader.
You can also find the Gmail Mobile application at this address as well however if you are a Google Apps user such as I you will need to visit http://m.google.com/a/ instead.
Next from the Nokia Beta Labs we will install the Nokia Location tagger http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/locationtagger. This one however you will need to download to your computer and install via the Nokia PCSuite as the Nokia Beta labs website for some reason does not detect mobile browsers so navigation can be cumbersome.
Also whilst at the Nokia beta labs we will grab Conversation http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/conversation, which allows you to read your sms’s as, well, a conversation much like the Gmail interface.
Prior to the installation of Conversation however you must install a little App called Nokia Internet Services Support Package. This can be found on the same page as conversation.
Now that we are Google-ified and we have our SMSing sorted out we should sort out the safekeeping of all of those SMS’s. GSync allows you to automatically sync your SMS messages with your Gmail account and is extremely good at it.
For me, the above is my optimal handset software configuration. These applications allow me to be completely mobile with Search, maps and email as well as provides me with the knowledge that my SMS’s will always be accessible no matter what happens.
Stay tuned for how to fine tune your handset with shortcuts, themes and ringtones.
