My apologies Amos for this delayed response to your email.
Reader Question - From Amos
——————————
Thanks for putting up this site. It looks like just the thing I was dreaming to find on the net.
I just moved from Optus to 3Mobile and still use my trusty old unlocked 6280 with it. I managed to set it up to allow Opera mini and GMail for Mobile (and Google Maps for Mobile) to connect, and even able to send MMS-to-email using it.
But in the process I screwed up the internal browser and it doesn’t work any more, instead it gives the “subscribe to packet data” (which used to be the error I got for all the other applications until I fixed them).
That by itself is not a big loss but it means that if GMail wants to open a link it tries to use the internal browser - and fails. It also means I lost the ability to access My3 from my mobile so I can’t check on my precious data plan quota from the mobile itself. I tried to copy the address which worked with the internal browser (”http://three.net.au/go/to/01205″) but it doesn’t work (even just “three.net.au” fails). I also couldn’t find a way to tell GMail to use the Opera browser.
Can you help me?

Hello Amos,
Thank you for your email. I am so glad that you have found this site helpful and I hope I can assist with your above described problem.
From what I can see there are two parts to this issue.
- Can Opera Mini be used as the default browser on a Nokia 6280?
- How do you fix the “subscribe to packet data” error?
Problem #1 - Can Opera Mini be used as the default browser on a Nokia 6280?
Short answer: No.
Long Answer: No, sorry.
As Opera Mini is a Java application is it not possible to force the Nokia 6280 or any other handset to utilise Opera Mini as its default browser. The only way that this could happen would be if it was developed as a native S40 or S60 application. Neither of which it is.
Problem #2 - How do you fix the “subscribe to packet data” error?
The only thing that I can think of is that the web browser isn’t configured correctly.
My suggestion would be to check the access point configuration for the browser specifically.
To do this:
- Press “menu” and navigate to the “Web” icon.
- Navigate to “Settings”
- Navigate to “Configuration Settings”
- Ensure that “Configuration” has been set to “3″
- Ensure that “Account” has been set to “Planet 3″
Alternatively
- Press “Menu” and navigate to the “Settings” icon.
- Navigate to “Connectivity”
- Navigate to “Packet data”
- Under the “Packet data connection” option select “When needed”
- Under the “Packet data settings” option select “Mobile Internet”
- Select “Edit active access point” then
- Select “Packet data access point” and ensure that “3netaccess” or “3services” is entered.
Hopefully one of these two solutions will work for you.
Again, my apologies for the delay in responding to your email and I wish you luck with this issue.
Please let me know how you go.
